How Dubai’s hype destroyed Aerosmith’s performance
When word broke out that Aerosmith were hitting Dubai as part of their summer tour, there was quite a turbulent reaction on the Dubai music scene. I personally had a huge set of mixed emotions and thoughts regarding what Aerosmith will be doing when they reach Dubai. We are seeing legends that were part of the uprising force that shaped a lot of today’s music genres. Are they going to play all their good songs? Are they going to like the crowd? How are they going to survive the reeking humidity of Dubai’s summer? The list kept growing.
Then finally, Aerosmith hits the stage and unfortunately did not satisfy the hype that was being built around this show for the past month.
I’d like to believe that old age played a factor in the sub-par performance and humidity I was forced to sit throughout for 2 hours. Yet thanks to Brad Whitford’s attitude and magnificent performance, he’s pretty much shown what a 55 year old man with an axe can do.
I still see no valid reason for Joe Perry switching at least 6 guitar pieces for what seemed like a complete repetition of pentatonic solos and repeated notes. Not to mention the horrible attempt at going unplugged with the acoustic guitar and Mr. Tyler exposing his “Lick Me” belly scribble while hypocritically telling some girl upfront that he won’t take her backstage because “this” is everything. In terms of performance, the band was super tight except for a few minor glitches, but that’s something that you should normally expect from a band with 25+ years of touring experience. The drummer was a complete disaster though. 15 songs with one drum beat and NOT EVEN ONE drum roll. At least humor us and hit a cowbell or something. Nothing
Regarding sound, Mirage Promotions couldn’t have done a worse job in making Aerosmith sound like they were jamming in a garage studio. Thank you for the great entrance organization, yet you failed miserably on sound. Evidently, this also pointed out how over-glorified some of Aerosmith’s recordings are. A prime example was “I don’t want to miss a thing”. The difference is ridiculously remarkable and makes me wonder if they would have sounded better if they had a good man behind the mixing deck.
Unfortunately, they hype that preceded this show has created the illusion of a perfect performance. Some expectations were probably met, but mine was put to sleep. At least I can now say I’ve seen Aerosmith live. Hopefully, no one will ask for details ![]()

Oh I soooo knew this was gonna happen, I turned down a free ticket, not because I am pissimistic or because I do not like Aerosmith, but because I knew it was not worth it. Hence, the hassle in commuting, bearing with a huge and superbly mixed crowd, and watching the remainders of what was known as Aerosmith perform just because they are commercially obliged to, not because they like the place or crowd who is attending ‘em. Just as obliged as you were when you attended their concert to cover it here (jakkawi) and there (ph) ;). Cheers.

I thought the show wasn’t bad.
Performance wise it started off a bit too slow. Whitford and Kramer appeared to be too tired to do anything. At the beginning Whitford looked as if he didn’t even want to be there.
A few songs in Tyler and Perry got into it. Tyler honestly gave a fantastic show and performance. It was the crowd that was full of shit. They wouldn’t even respond to him. I see these 40+ dudes who are apparently Aerosmith fans yet they don’t even react to the music. Fucking bull man.
What was a shame about the sound was how it fucked up a few times. Tyler’s voice was crisp clear, and that made a HUGE difference. Yet the encore was massacred with the sound problem. It wasn’t until the second verse that the mic was back on.
Perry had a few guitar issues earlier on with his axe, and the shirt thing was fantastic.
I honestly had a blast, and I do think that a free ticket would have been worth it. I didn’t find any parking problems, but thats because I parked near the parking entrance and left about an hour or so after the gig was over, waiting for the buses, taxis and most of the people to leave.
I thought it was a good show, and I had a blast.

@Mazen: Unfortunately man, they did not allow me to shoot for Phride. What a shame.
@Fizz: I sympathize with Aerosmith man. Regardless of my discontent with the show, I can’t believe Mirage did not pull of everything they had to provide the best sound. Dubai’s crowd never came through at any local show which gave me the shock of my life watching people chant along with Maiden’s “Fear of the Dark”. Too bad but as I said earlier, It was always great seeing them on stage. It’s Aerosmith after all.

I for one was disappointed as well, although I ran around saying how ammmmazing (with an emphases on the “M” to make it sound like I do mean it) Aerosmith were. It’s true they looked like rock stars (and felt like ones apparently) and they looked exactly how I thought they would just when I was a little girl watching “Hole in My Soul” live on TV.
Ill tell you what, Aerosmith is a great band and I do very much love their music, but the whole experience just didn’t do it for me. It would be nice to say somewhere down the line that I have seen Aerosmith live in concert, but I’m yet awaiting for that one band that will blow me away…
Steve Taylor is a great guy…why did he try so hard to look like a woman? It just somehow did not feel like pure and utter Rock N’ Roll.
So, enough complaining.
I’m off to bed.

Did anyone notice Tom Hamilton was wearing the same t-shirt he wore when they were photographed for the Toys in the Attic album cover?
That’s 1975…
Dude?!
Apart from that, they were great. Sound problems yes, but still great!
